Washington was an important railway junction where the Newcastle to Leamside Railway via the Victoria Bridge crossed the Stanhope to Tyne Railway. Passenger services at Washington Station were withdrawn in 1963, although the Station continued in service for special trains to the Durham Miners Gala each July. (very little now remains of the station) early 1900's
