Sunderland Station on 16/10/1962. The end opening leads through the main station buiilding to the square doors which open to the covered taxi area outside. The two ramps to the platforms are behind the camera. When built in 1879 this North End of the station was an impressive structure but it was also a goods entrance and by the 30's it was badly run down and the arcade shown had many slot machines. In 1965 the main building and spire were demolished to make way for Littlewoods (then) on High St. Over the following years all traces of the Victorian station have disappeared into a completely different undergound layout. Information from Len Charlton.

Fawcett Street has never been the same since they demolished the Sunderland Town Hall in 1971. It was built in 1890 and this view of the much-loved building was taken before 1900. On the left can be seen the south entrance to the Central Station, built by the North Eastern Railway in 1850. On the right is the Singer Sewing Machine Company shop on the corner of Athenaeum Street. The open space beyond the town hall was filled by a ‘temporary’ wooden building used as offices for the new electric tramway from 1900 till 1906. It was later used as the library reading rooms and lasted until the town hall was demolished. Info from Malcolm Fraser
