Holmeside, after 1937. Vine Place is behind the camera, Crowtree Road to the left and Park Lane to the right while Holmeside runs ahead towards the town centre. The Ritz cinema opened in1937 but became the ABC in 1961 and the cars seem right for the earlier date. Information from Len Charlton.

It is 1903 and we are standing in High Street West, on the corner of Gill Bridge Avenue, looking east towards Mackies Corner. Tram 39 is passing Castle Street on its way to the Circle terminus at the north end of the Central Station. The tramway here was originally operated by horse trams but it was electrified in February 1901. Number 39 was delivered at the same time, so both the tram and the track are a couple of years old. On the left, Kennedy’s shop in the Cobden Exchange building will be destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1904 but will be rebuilt to survive until the 1980’s. Info from Malcolm Fraser
