The "New Arcade" later generally known as Palmer's Arcade opened in 1874 and closed in 1973.
The New Arcade survived early German bombing raids, but suffered extensive blast damage on March 13, 1943. It was boarded up for the rest of the war and re-opened in 1951.
The arcade ran from St Thomas Street to High Street East, and its shops opened until 9pm.
