Collier Row off HighSt West. This short row of delapidated cottages faced an open square in front of the central fire station the end of which is visible on the left. The station was closed in the 1990s but the facade retained . The cottages were beyond saving. The open square is now an attractive pedestrian precinct used for functions including a Christmas Ice-Rink. Photograph N Kirtlan, caption Len Charlton.
After a major rebuild the Dun Cow became a large very popular pub sited facing the Empire Theatre (the entrance canopy and sign are on the left edge of photo ). The railings are in Bishopwearmouth church grounds. Photograph N Kirtlan, caption Len Charlton.
The Black Bull 309 High St West survived wholesale clearances of the area for redevelopment in the 1950s. The facade remains much the same but the magnificent bull and lamp have gone. Photograph N Kirtlan, caption Len Charlton.
