Vaux Breweries were a major employer situated with some smaller breweries behind HighSt West in the heart of Sunderland and the smell of malt pervaded the area. Their dray horses were much admired and popular both in the streets and at shows. Some were still at work in the 1990s. Photo N Kirtlan, info Len Charlton.

North-Eastern Breweries was formed in 1876 from The Wear Brewery whose history went back to 1769. Over the years many other breweries and hotels amalgamated into North Eastern Breweries as did the major Sunderland Brewery, Vaux, in 1927. Photo N Kirtlan, info Len Charlton.
