Gordon Hastings in the park at Seaburn in 1946, the park was surrounded by trees in those days. "Out of shot to the right was the communal concrete air-raid shelter where we spent many hours waiting for the all-clear siren. That was before a Morrison shelter was installed at home.
In those days toys were few and far between , one hobby, however, was to go out the morning after an air-raid and collect shrapnel. A really prized find was a piece of parachute silk from a landmine!"
