Roker Pier This photo show the new north pier and lighthouse which was opened in 1903. This with a new south pier enclosed the old harbour entrance which had small original piers dating back to 1786. The old north pier had its own lighthouse and more than one ship tried to enter the harbour between the two lighhouses and ran aground on the beach. The old lighthouse is now a plain navigation aid. The new north pier is no longer open to the public. The house in the foreground is the lighthouse keeper's cottage built on the blockyard which was formed to store the blocks used to construct the pier. A rail line was built on the pier as it was extended to carry the blocks. It can be made out on the photo along the right side of the pier. Information from Len Charlton.
