The River Wear before 1923. This photograph gives a good impression of how busy the shipyards were in the early 1900's.There are at least seven ships visible on this short stretch of the Wear below the bridge.,The three ships in the foreground, one raised on the pontoon are all in Austin's shipyard.

This photo dated 1919 shows the railway bridge built 1879 then downstream the road bridge built by Robert Stephenson in 1859. This was the second cast iron road bridge, the first having been built in 1793.
