Bridges and coal drops on the Wear. c1910 ? The main collieries supplying the Sunderland drops were in the Hetton area some five miles away. One line ran over Warden Law then far too steep for locomotives and several lengths of railway had to be cable hauled. It was a complex system developed by George Stephenson, attracting world wide attention and triggering off the world railway boom. Information from Len Charlton.
