Wear Bridge 1796 This, the first Wearmouth Bridge was at 240 feet the longest single span cast iron bridge in the world. Begun in 1793 it was opened in 1796. In 1857 a major reconstruction was carried out by Robert Stephenson after a few bits dropped off. It survived until 1927 when the present bridge was built around the old one and re-opened in 1929.
