Quayside / Mariners Arms. Low St ran for nearly a mile between HighSt East and the river which it eventually joined to form the quaysides. The street was a ramshackle mixture of old buildings which in 1844 included over 26 inns and taverns of which 3 were named "Golden Anchor" indicating the seafaring interests. Many of these buildings were the backs of properties facing High St East which were at a much higher level and to which Low St was connected by narrow steps and lanes which offered many opportunities for crime. It looks as though work has started on alleviating the terrible sanitation problems of the mid 1800s. Information from Len Charlton. N Kirtlan

Ferry, Bodlewell Lane. The main ferry across the river known as the "High Ferry" crossed between Monkwearmouth and Bodlewell Lane from 1710 to 1957. Rowing boats were used for many years but then replaced by small steam ferries popular with shipyard workers as well as shoppers from Monkwearmouth going to the East end markets.
