The Sunderland Ferry also known as the "High Ferry" crossed the river between the East End and Monkwearmouth. Hundreds of workers used the ferry rather than the bridge which was further upriver. This is the "Sir Walter Raine" which served reliably until 1957 by which time shipyards were closing and the East End markets has finished. Information from Len Charlton.
