Created by the Goverment in 1859 to counter the threat of Napolean 111 of France, the Volunteer Movement was designed to let towns look after their own defence. Lady Londoderry formed the Seaham Volunteer Artillery Brigade in 1860. Photograph, Seaham Volunteers on Terrace Green, date not known.

The 2nd Durham (Seaham) Volunteer Artillery Brigade. Volunteers leaving rear of Drill Hall in Castlereagh Rd in 1912 Built in 1888, the Drill Hall burnt down in 1986 after 28 years as a clothing factory.
