Book commences January 1868

Jan 13th 1868     Commenced school duties, admitted 40 children in the morning, in the afternoon 15. Time throughout the day occupied in obtaining the names & age of children and also occupation of parents. Reverend D M Cust and Rev'd White visited school.

Jan 14th    Rev'd Cust and Rev'd Scot visited school.

      15th    Holiday on account of a visit paid by the Prince & Princess of Teck to the town.

      27th    Not so many children present owing to the stormy morning, obliged to dismiss school early owing to the smoky room.

      28th    Men building chimneys higher.

Feb 5th     Got two sets of Block Letters and alphabet sheets.

       10th   Was very glad to discover a new table on entering school.

       11th   Got 3 dozen slates.

       13th   Formal opening of school by Lord & Lady Vane.

       21st   Had not sufficient slates for the little ones, got 12 more.

Mar 2nd   140 present in the afternoon.

       19th   Revd C W King HMI accompanied by Rev'd D M Cust  & Rev'd Hunter visited school.

        24th  Caroline Watson, one of the candidates left school - reason- "wished to be a dressmaker"

Apr  21st  One of the scholar's parents came to school to complain of one of the teachers beating her child - spoke to the teachers afterwards & told them not to strike any child.

        28th  Got 3 dozen First Standard reading books

May  6th   Sent Theodore Wright home in the afternoon - reason - fell in the playground and cut his forehead.

        13th  Punished 3 boys for throwing stones in the playground.

        21st  E Colling gave a gallery lesson - subject - "Healing of the two blind men"

        26th  E Colling absent from school - reason - "Wanted at home"

Jun     9th  E Colling left school - reason - "Mother wished her to go to service"  

         26th Mr Boggon visited school in the morning, children sang for him.

Jul       9th Summer holidays commence, average for week 83

Aug    31st  Isabella Burwood commenced duties as a teacher.

Sept   14th  Children amused for half an hour by a ventriloquist.

        22nd Punished 4 boys for climbing on the playground gate

        30th  Got 6 Progressive Reading Books.

Nov   5th  Holiday in afternoon - reason - Gunpowder Plot Day.

         24th Holiday - reason - Election Day.

Dec   8th  Dismissed children at 3-45 - reason - that the room might be prepared for the School of Art.

Jan   12th  Holiday in the afternoon - reason - Marriage of Lord Ernest Vane Tempest.

Dec   7th  Rev'd DM Cust in school for a little while - gave him the names of some children who were back in payments.   

       23rd  Christmas holidays commenced. Each child present had an orange given by the Rev'd D M Cust.

1870

Feb  22nd George Boggon lost his glove in school - made enquiries but it could not be found.

Mar  11th School inspected by  HMI - "Miss Pickering will shortly receive her certificate"

Jun  27th  Sent after absent scholars - found many of them away through sickness and many children unable to pay their school pence owing to parents being out of work.

Aug  4th  Had a visit from Rev Collins

       25th Holiday - reason - Rev'd D M Cust's wedding day.

Sep  2nd  Holiday given - reason - Countess Vane's school treat.

Nov  2nd  Mrs Thorman, Mrs Sheridan & Rev'd J Sawyer in school. Children sang for them.

       21st  School pence very low. Many children did not pay.

Dec  5th  Messrs Campbell and Watson in school to obtain length breadth etc for Education Board.

Jan  16th  Admitted several children, some from the Foundry School.

Feb   7th  Schoolroom full of smoke due to high winds.

       29th  Mistress absent from sickness - School in charge of Pupil Teachers who had lessons from Miss Lambert.

Sep  4th  Mr Musgrave, a former schoolmaster here, visited school this morning.

Oct  10th  J B Eminson visited school.

Nov  22nd  Rev'd J Colling came into school to announce a Magic Lantern at 6pm today.

1873

Feb  24th  Isabella Burwood gave 6 months notice to leave school in order to get married.

May  15th  Attendance slightly on the increase and would probably have been still higher had it not been for the strike among the pitmen

Result of Pupil Teacher's Examination showed that their months work had been fairly done. Omitted to notice in two previous weeks entry that Mr Hamer gave all the pupils a music lesson - one hour a week 

Jun  12th  School visited on Tuesday by Miss James & Mr Waister - latter came to give notice of Mr Cust's presentation.

Oct  23rd  School visited by Rev'd J Colling & Miss Anderson, a student from Durham Training College who has been appointed Mistress of this school after Christmas.

Dec  11th  School Treat - Tea and Magic Lantern on Friday from 4 to 7pm

         23rd  Miss Horsfall left her situation as Mistress

Jan  11th  Mary Frances Anderson entered upon her duties as Mistress of this school.

       20th  New classroom finished and used by children.

       22nd  Easy homework now given to children who have slates of their own - result very gratifying for many children have bought slates in order to perform little tasks at night.

       27th  Several children absent this afternoon owing to their following a large "Volunteer funeral"

Feb  10th  This afternoon school again visited by Lady Londonderry accompanied by her daughter, two ladies & Rev'd J Colling. Her Ladyship said she was much pleased with the children's counting, singing, needlework etc and kindly desired the Mistress to grant them holiday tomorrow afternoon as a reward for their good behaviour.

         24th  Received cards from Board of Guardians to insert in the Attendances of children, to be paid for by the Board.

1876

Mar  3rd  Received 5 books "Royal Readers" for Pupil Teachers.

        8th  This afternoon the school was visited by the Marchioness of Londonderry & Lady Edwards accompanied by the Rev'd J Colling & Rev'd A P Jollye. Number of children present - 204.

       24th  Allowed children in class 1 to draw a ship on their slates

       30th  Miss Rewcastle left school having terminated her engagement. Felt very sorry to lose her.

Apr  2nd  Grace Aird entered school as a Candidate.

Sep  6th  Holiday this afternoon - reason - Horticultural Show at Seaham Hall.

       26th  Results of Examination of PTs on Saturday showed only fair results with the exception of A Aird who did a very good paper.

Oct  4th  School was honoured by a visit from the Marchioness of Londonderry & Lady Alice Vane Tempest.

         30th  The Rev'd J Colling visited the school, made enquiries about the "barring out" which occurred yesterday being the 29th of May.

June 29th to July 30th  Midsummer Holidays.

Jul  31st  School re-assembled after Midsummer Holidays. Miss Wightman was unable to return owing to illness & was obliged to give up her school duties altogether. School in charge of Pupil Teachers & regularly visited by Miss Lambert who also took the PTs in their various lessons

Sep  10th  Kate Richardson commenced duties as Mistress of this school.

May  31st  Mrs Stockdale said declined to get the Child's School Book Requisition sheet filled in saying that she would keep her little boy at home rather than pay for a Certificate of Birth.

Jun 7th  Notice given to the Rev'd W H Walter, Principal of Durham Training College that Harriet Henderson will not be able to attend the Scholarship Examination which is to take place in July - cause illness.

      17th  Mrs Reed brought her two children to school this morning and stated that she could not pay for the Certificate of Birth necessary for the filling up of the first page of the Child's School Book.

      28th  Visitor Mrs Aird who gave the children nuts and sweets.

              Harriet Henderson died this evening at 9 o' clock  

Aug  5th  Gave M Boggon permission to be absent from school to attend the funeral of Mrs G Boggon.

        9th  On Wednesday a little boy named Fred Allen fell in going home from school and broke his leg.

Sep  9th  School visited by Mr Mason who filled up the pages of several school books and took away a list of absentees.

       30th  Pupil Teachers attended the annual exam in the Boys School

Oct  18th  Got a number of children's ages from the Register entered in Family Bible in order to fill up the first page of the Child's Book as the parents objected to pay for the Certificate of Birth.

Apr 22nd  Attendance very much improved, a number of children having returned who were kept away yesterday because their parents were unable to pay their school fees owing to the miners strike.

Sep  10th  There was a half holiday on Wednesday as the Flower Show was postponed on account of the explosion at the Colliery. The Rev'd Colling called on Thursday morning and spoke to the children about the sad accident and told them that in consequence of it there would be no treat on Friday.

Dec  3rd  Miss Lambert has allowed A Aungle and Blanche Draper to come and teach alternately during the week as G Aird and A Brown are still away sick.

Dec  10th  Closed school at 3-45 in the afternoon so that the room might be prepared for a Magic Lantern.

Feb  25th  Mr Bulmer called for a list of absentees - gave him a list of 25 names.

Mar  23rd  The PTs were examined in secular work on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Apr 1st  Sent for absentees as Mr Bulmer did not come on Monday.

May  6th  A Brown has left school altogether this week not being strong enough for the work.

Jun  24th  M Boggon called on Friday evening to say that Dr French thought she had better remain at home until after the Midsummer Holidays as the children were still sick.

Aug  12th  G Aird knew nothing whatever about her history on Thursday evening.

Sep  19th  G Aird at home on Wednesday and Thursday because she was spoken to about coming so often with unprepared lessons - Since Midsummer she has very seldom learnt her lessons properly.

May  12th  M Marshall came to school on Monday morning with the intention of sitting as candidate at the annual examinations of PTs held in October.

May  26th  G Aird absent on Monday morning for the absurd reason that she had the dinner to cook and when told that she must not stay away again for the same reason replied that she would have to stay away when required. Absent again from Tuesday to Thursday without sending any message to me as to reason for absence.

Jun  16th  M Boggon received notice on Friday morning that the Scholarship[ Examination would commence on July 3rd

       30th  Gave M Boggon and G Aird the whole of the week for study as they sit for scholarship next week.

Dec  8th  G Aird absent on Thursday to go to Pittington to see the school in which she has been appointed Assistant Mistress. She begins work there on 24th January 1883

Jan  25th  The Rev'd J Wallis  visited the school on Wednesday afternoon and presented 24 of the 1st class  with picture books and the rest of the children with a packet of sweets each.

May  31st VISIT BY HMI Arthur E Bernays  "The offices (toilets) require immediate cleansing and have been most improperly used. The boy's convenience too should be partitioned and ought to be enlarged. There appears to be a considerable down draught from the ventilation in the smaller classroom.

*Referring to HM Inspector's observation on the offices on his visit (May 31st) the managers have arranged with Mr James Burrell, Sanitary Inspector, to clean out the ash-pits at short and regular intervals, he holding himself responsible for the satisfactory and cleanly condition of the same.....Jas Colling   June 3rd 1889

"Gallery teaching is attended with creditable success, M A Jameson and H Braid have passed well, L Gibson (whose spelling and arithmetic need attention) should be informed that she is not qualified by this examination under article 50 or 52. Jun  25th  The Vicar has appointed Miss Tindale from Chilton Moor School to begin work as Assistant on Monday August 3rd

Aug  21st  Miss Fishwick and Miss H Lewis visited school on Thursday afternoon and presented each child with a packet of sweets.

        28th  Holiday on Monday afternoon - Primrose League picnic to Wynyard..

THE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION ACT 1891

The managers have decided to accept the fee of 10/- (50p) for each scholar in average attendance and to admit all scholars in the Infant Department free. The charge for books and other school requisites will be as heretofore. This arrangement to take effect from Sept 1st 1891. The charge before this date was 2d per week per scholar. Nov  18th  Rev'd J Colling posted a notice in school to the effect that free science lectures  would be given on Saturday mornings at the Science and Art School, Newcastle on Tyne for the benefit of teachers in elementary schools.

Jan  11th  Miss Tindale left school23rd December - Gone to St Paul's School, Hendon.

       15th  M A Jameson acting as temporary monitor in school this week.

       29th  M A Jameson went back to college on Monday, since then I've had two monitors from the Girl's School .

Jan  11th   Jean Boggon left school on 20th December 1894 to enter Durham College on January 16th 1895.

       18th Miss Fishwick sent each of the children a bag of sweets.

Feb  1st  Mr Dawson HMI called on Friday morning.

Mar  1st  The annual scripture examination was held on Thursday morning. The Rev'd J Colling presented the prizes at the above examination in the afternoon.

May  31st  Gave holiday on Thursday afternoon as only 36 children came to school - there was a circus in the town.

Aug  16th  H B Wright gave a tea for all the children attending school.

Sep  13th  Holiday on Thursday, visit of Channel Fleet to Sunderland.

Jan  31st  Dora Ellemore began work as Monitor in this school on January 6th and Elizabeth Nicholson on Jan 28th

Jun  5th  Mary Thompson began work as Monitor in this school on Friday last.

Aug  4th  "Visited the school - 2nd visit Art 84(b).  The school is very overcrowded and increased accommodation urgently needed. The galleries should be provided with desks. Sep  30th  INSPECTOR'S REPORT - The excellent work of Miss A Chapman deserves special mention.  After considering the explanation contained in your letter of the 10th instant with regard to the infraction of Article 85(a) my Lords have consented to payment of the grant but no further grant must be looked for if the average attendance is allowed to exceed the prescribed limits.

The name of A C Goode, Pupil Teacher has been removed from the register

        27th  Lady Londonderry accompanied by Sir M Hicks-Beach and Lady Lucy Hicks-Beach visited school on Wednesday morning. Half holiday on Friday - Primrose League Fete.

Sep  3rd  Miss Wedgewood (Wynyard) visited the school on Tuesday afternoon.

               H Brown Esq brought the Pupil Teachers the papers done at the April examination to look at.

               Holiday on Wednesday - Choir & Sunday School Teachers excursion.

Sep  10th  The following visitors were at the school on Wednesday afternoon - Mrs Aird, Rev'd J and Mrs Short, Mrs Currie, Mrs Gray, Mrs Carse, Miss Bolam and Miss Brown.

        30th  HMI inspection - School overcrowded - The grant is paid on the understanding that the building of a new Infants School will be carried on with all possible despatch .

        S Hall and T V Anderson are recognised under Art 33 of the code, E Dunn and J Dawson under Art 68.
