ARP (Air Raid Precautions) Ambulance in Seaham during WW2 Air Raid Casualties in Seaham 12/8/40 1 killed 15/8/40 12 killed 44 injured 16/2/41 4 killed 9 injured 9/5/41 1 killed 21/10/41 2 killed 12 injured 12/11/41 4 injured 19/9/42 1 killed 3 injured 12/12/42 1 killed 1 injured 16/5/43 34 killed 151 injured Seaham suffered more than any other Co Durham district.. In the daylight raid on 15/8/40 a Messerschmitt110 was shot down, bombs dropped on Dawdon, 12 deaths, 119 people homeless, 5 houses demolished, Dawdon Church, Vicarage and 230 houses damaged. In the night raid of 16/5/43, a land mine exploded on the corner of ViceroySt, Sophia St and Adolphus St West- 34 deaths- 154 casualties - Presbyterian Church and 113 houses totally demolished- 1200 houses damaged - 102 families homeless - 1200 other persons billeted out, Wagonworks, St Johns Church, Viceroy St Infants School and National Schools all damaged. 3266 Seaham people served in Hm Forces and of these 181 lost their lives.
