Laying foundation stone of new South Dock on 26 / 8 / 1899 by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The dignitaries then travelled by train to Dawdon where Theresa, Marchioness of Londonderry and her son Viscount Castlereagh cut the sod for each of the new colliery's shafts.
