Seaham's first gasworks built by Henry Hall Smith, a North Terrace chemist, supplied the town from 1844 until 1873 when it was bought by the new Seaham Gas Company who closed it down. S G Co had built or begun building a large new gasworks opposite the Candlish Bottleworks as early as 1866.
