An early photograph of St John's Vicarage at the top of the Dene Bank just north of Maureen Terrace.
In 1869 Robert Graydon built Bengal House and Gardens a couple of hundred yards away at the eastern end of the dene. This venture soon failed as the then vicar D M Cust successfully opposed the granting of a spirits licence "within sight and sound of his vicarage".
Advertised as Bengal Gardens, quadrille band attends for the accommodation of dancing parties, ideal for picnic parties, this venture, situated in a beautiful part of the town next to the park (1935) could have been a real asset to the town.
