John Candlish opened his bottleworks in 1853 and absorbed the nearby Fenwick's Bottleworks in 1856. When he died in 1874 his factory consisted of seven bottlehouses. In this photograph the seventh ( close to Gallery Row at right ) has not yet been built Photograph 1870. Prior to these bottleworks there was a small glassworks in the yard of The Canterbury in North Railway St
