Welcome

East-Durham.co.uk is a Seaham based local history project designed to capture and preserve photographs, memories of past times and experiences before they are lost and forgotten..

We hope that Seaham folk and all residents of east Durham Sunderland and Newcastle, ex-pats and their descendants will get involved, ask questions and answer them, upload their pictures, add information to those already  there and tell us of their experiences.

Here you will find a fascinating visual history of our area. its highs and its lows  from 1784 to the present day. Alongside the pictures there is a huge amount of historical text including 3 unpublished histories plus numerous articles, some from the 19th century, together they cover almost every aspect of life in the North East of England of yesterday.

We want this website to be a permanent and growing archive of North-East England's local history. With the proud mining heritage of this area, the site will also provide a growing record and resource for ex-miners and their families and the younger generation to better understand the industry upon which the area was established.
Although the existing photographic archive is comprehensive, this online archive is intended to become a focus for the collection of further local information through the contribution of family histories and photographs through moderated forums, As such this is regarded as an on going project, which will attract a huge interest and response from the local community and beyond.

Many thanks must go to the many people who, since 1975, have kindly given me photographs or loaned me prints to copy, without them this site would not exist.
