This is Durham Road at Houghton in 1932, with the Broadway beyond, looking a lot more peaceful than it is today. The bus is number 403 in the Northern General Transport fleet and is four years old in this view. It is an SOS QL and there weren't all that many of those in this area so this picture is something of a rarity. The driver and conductress have brought it from Chester le Street on service 12 and are waiting whilst the lady climbs aboard before setting out for Easington Lane and the Village.
