Just out of sight beyond the houses in the distance was "The White Gates", where the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway crossed the the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway crossed the Easington to Wardley road (later A182), on its way from Hetton Colliery to Elemore Colliery. "The White Gates" remained the official name for the local bus stop for many years after the railway closed in 1959. Caption by Sheldon Clark

Hetton Station in the 1950s. This is looking roughly eastwards from the bridge where the Easington to Wardley road (later A182), crossed the old Durham & Sunderland Railway, in the direction of Murton Junction. I think the bridge in the distance carried the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway to Hetton and Elemore Collieries. Caption by Sheldon Clark

Hetton Colliery in 1844 by T Hair. This print (from a lithograph) shows at least one early steam locomotive and numerous chaldron wagons, some of which are being hauled by a horse, on what had started as the Hetton Colliery Railway and later became a major part of the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Railway. The original railway was engineered by George Stephenson and is probably unique in that, from the start, it utiised no fewer than four methods of haulage: horses and locomotives on the level sections, stationary steam engines on the climbs up to Warden Law and North Moor, and self-acting inclines on the drop down to the river at Sunderland.
