Hawthorn Towers a Gothic-style 30 room mansion originally called Hawthorn Cottage, it was built around 1810 by a Major George Anderson of Newcastle. Owned and lived in by the Pemberton family from the 1850s until 1910. Malcolm Dillon the Londonderry Colliery Agent then lived there for a while followed by Mr Henegan another Colliery Agent. In the 1930s it was rented by the Boys' Brigade for weekend camps then during WW2 it was used by the military and the Home Guard. The Pemberton family sold it in the late 1940s and it had several owners before being demolished in 1969. In 1891 the 6 members of the Pemberton family lived here along with 22 servants.
