Durham Market Place, dominated by the Church of St Nicholas. c 1910
The domed structure on the right, with the statue of Neptune on top was 'The Pant', originally the only water supply in the City, which was fed from the Fram Spring up near the railway station. The pant was the responsibilty of a 'Pant Master' who received one shilling (5p) a year. This amount was still being paid to the City Engineer in the 1960's. Caption from Malcolm Fraser
Durham Miners' Hall opened 1915.
This building on Red Hills replaced the original Miners Hall in North Road, which is still standing and occupied by a night club and an amusement arcade. The upper floor of the front of the old building still has niches set in it which used to house statues of miners leaders. Caption, Malcolm Fraser
