Durham Market Place in the 1960s, police traffic control box to right. A world first for Durham!. In 1960, the traffic control box in Durham market place became the first in the world to be fitted with television screens to control the traffic. They were connected to two cameras, one at the bottom of Silver Street looking at Framwellgate bridge and the other in Saddler Street looking at Elvet bridge. The control box became obsolete when new bridges were built and the market place no longer had all the through traffic. Caption from Malcolm Fraser
